Miss World New Zealand 2008

Kahurangi Taylor, a 16 year old lass, was crowned Miss World New Zealand 2008 last weekend. She beat 18 women from around the country including pageant veterans; Tegan Smith, Michyla Harry, Leah-Anne Ridding and Kimberley Powell (NZ's representative at Miss Tourism International 2008 and she was one of the faves to win the title). Kahurangi will represent New Zealand at the Miss World 2008 pageant in Ukraine.

MY THOUGHTS: I was really disappointed that Kimberley Powell didn't win the title because out of all the delegates, she's the only one who has an international beauty pageant experience under her belt. I have a gut feeling that her evening gown was one of the reasons why she didn't win the title. I must say that Kahurangi's evening gown is gorgeous. One thing I noticed was the diversity of this year's batch (Jenna Flores was born in the Philippines, Leah-Anne Ridding is half Filipina, Kahurangi is Maori, Shanan is Samoan, Anita is probably Indian or Fijian and I'm definitely sure that Maureen & Victoria are both Africans). Although I'm a bit hesitant about Kahurangi's win because I still think she's too young to compete internationally. But based on the trend for the past five years, Miss World Organization had always crowned a very young woman to hold the Miss World title. Miss World 2003, Rosanna Davison and Miss World 2006, Tatana Kucharova both won the title when they were only 18 years old.

Congratulation Girls! You all did a wonderful job!

  • where do you get your information from sophie? kimberly was not the only girl in the pageant with over seas experience. whos favourite was hse to win.

granted shes a lovely girl and gorgeous too and fully would have deserved it if she did win but there were plenty of other girls in the pageants that were favourites to win as well. And others with overseas pageant experience as well.

  • Julia Morley, CEO of Miss World Organization, is in the country at the moment. She was very pleased to see Kahurangi. Miss World 2007, Zi Lin Zhang will arrive on Saturday to be with Julia Morley (attending the Variety Club Convention)and to meet Kahurangi. Both will be attending as
VIP guests at the Variety Club International Humanitarian Awards in Sky City Grand Hall.

  • I think that Kahurangi will do an amazing job for us and I think the judges picked the winner very very well. I however have a few issues with the runner ups. I think that Kimberly should have gotten first runner up then Leah-Anne. I was very disappointed to see Alesha Adams get first runner up and that Aleisha Faulkner did not make it into the top.

  • Haha, the real funny thing is that you have taken the time to look at this blog AND comment. So you too must have nothing better to do with your time.

  • I am curious, why do people not think that Alesha Adams should have gotten 2nd? I was unfortunately unable to go to the show and was just wondering.

  • kahurangi has already competed over seas for nz
shes tall slim and pretty with practise she could do well

Aleshia adams won best in swimwear so she deserved to be in with the finalists she had one of the better bodies

Chanel Hargreaves evening gown was stunning so was kahurangi

i WASNT so sure about the top 8 I tought mayb chanel and aleshia Faulkner should have been in there

However all the girls looked stunning and beautiful
From what i saw off stage I can bet that there wouldnt have been many points between the top 12 girls

One dissappointment was the questioning of the final 8. Only Kahurangi and aleshia A actually answered the question and there answers wernt that strong. the others miss interpreted it or just screwed it up. I thinks thats why some people would probably be up higher than you expected due to this

  • Get a copy of Aucklander mags this week. There's a news item about the pageant .... "The crowning moment of Miss World New Zealand 2008'... All 4 Editions (South, Central, West, & North)

  • I think its disappointing when some people a.k.a Adams, take other peoples answers and use it for themselves. Everyone these days is wanting to go overseas and "educate children in developing countries". Why cant people come up with real answers instead of what they think the judges want to hear? I thought Alesha Adams was incredibly fake and a phony. It was a real shame that the judges could not see through this.

  • For spectators from the distance it is very well easy to compare a contestant to another. For me the best people to ask about them are the organisers who spent most time with the girls in 12 consecutive weeks of rehearsals, interview, and photoshoots.

  • What does evening wear have to do with it? Kims evening wear was beautiful. Thats funny "I have a gut feeling she didnt win because of her evening wear" thats a silly thing to say

  • She looks like shes asleep in that photo

  • i didnt like alesha adams dress, very plain

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:45 PM

  • I didnt think Alesha Adams deserved it at all. I was even surprised she got the top 8.

  • im so disapointed with these results. aleisha f deserved to be there in place of the other alesha.

  • My reply to one of the posters:

Personally, evening gown should be one of the aspects of winning a beauty pageant title. I know that the Miss World pageant doesn't give a hoot about the girls' evening gown when selecting a winner but compared to its arch rival, Miss Universe, you need to have that 'gown' to actually make it in the semi-finals.

If I'm gonna judge a beauty pageant and the girl is wearing a hideous gown, I will not give that girl a high score based on the evening gown alone because it kinda represents that the girl doesn't give a damn about presentation.

I know that it's always VERY important that the girl is the ONE wearing the gown not the other way around but it should be a pre-requisite that each girl should wear a decent gown to use for the competition.

  • I heard from one of the organisers (closest to Julia) that the Miss World pageant will have a new direction aside from the "Beauty with a Purpose." The competition will not only be called as a mere beauty pageant but a Festival of Beauty (appearance & within)and Culture.

  • Does anyone know when the closing date to Miss Earth entries is?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:00 PM

  • Haha I love the first line on the post,

    "...after her modeling career."

Those poor uneducated children will just have to wait i guess.

  • I totaly agree, the evening gown is the most important part, this is where the young lady shows her style glamour and glitz, Im not sure if I agree Val Lott from Universe has importance of gowns as she caused a nightmare in Wanganui with a dress that cost 1500 dollars, and they didnt let the girl wear it on the catwalk, she was put in an ugly black dress crying, It was disgusting organisation. Annie Aspinal her franchisee run it that year and it was a disaster, not one of the girls had a good experience except the winner. The other Miss Earth competition in Wanganui is run amazingly and all their girls only have fun.

  • Go Miss Earth. Top notch pageant.

  • who will win miss scotland go to the sun newpaper wednesday 14th
    I say courtney stjohn

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:13 PM

  • I like your passion for Miss Earth unfortunately Miss World is still the top notch pageant. If you think Miss Earth NZ is best for you then you must have a very poor taste. Miss World NZ is now considered the best pageant in NZ.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:23 AM

  • Haha, Miss World the best pageant in NZ?? Get real.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:25 PM

  • You know, Miss World was not the pageant to enter until this year. Now it has a good reputation and is back. Earth has so much anticipation surrounding it - even more so than Universe and World, so one might come to the conclusion that Earth, if pulled off properly, is going to become the pageant to be seen in.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:54 PM

  • To Miss Prickly Earth,I think you are the only one trumpeting about Miss Earth, go for it! Surely you will be welcome even if you don't meet the criteria. There's no point comparing your pageant with the other two, World & Universe, because everybody knows where Miss Earth stands. And you seem to dislike so much Miss World (is it because you cannot penetrate?). Sorry darrrrling, just love teasing a prickly poster!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:26 PM

  • To the above comment - I think thats a little unfair to others who like universe and earth. If you read the above persons post properly you will see that they were not putting down world, just giving an opinion.

  • Having attended for the past years the 3 pageants;NZAPT (& now World), Universe, & Earth, I agree to the previous post that the NZAPT is most entertaining and well presented. Let's just accept in good nature that the organizing committee did a good job and deserves a pat on the back. I would suggest to pageant enthusiasts to see for yourself their pageant (NZAPT) instead of listening to biased posts.
