Alesha wants to teach in developing countries

There is more to being a beauty queen/cheerleader/model than just being really good-looking - you have to have "a purpose".

Christchurch's entrant to Miss World New Zealand, Alesha Adams, plans to educate children in developing countries - after she finishes her modelling career.

Despite her humanitarian goals, and her victory in the coveted swimwear section, Adams, 20, finished second in the Auckland pageant on Saturday to winner Kahurangi Taylor, 17.

Adams said Taylor "really did deserve" the win and would make "a really good representative for New Zealand" at the Miss World finals in the Ukraine in November.

Adams, a commerce student at Canterbury University as well as a dancer, model and Crusaders cheerleader, was one of two South Island entrants in the 21-contestant pageant. The other, Leah-Anne Ridding, placed third.

Adams said her Pacific-Rim inspired costume and the lyrical dance she performed stood her well but she had enjoyed the chance to talk to the judges.

"I feel personally my interview and my impromptu question were the best where I could show my intellect. The pageant's motto is `Beauty with a purpose'. It gave me some way to show my purpose and make some changes."

Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples said Taylor had been a member of the Maori Party since age 13. He congratulated her on winning the beauty pageant. She had "lived up to her name - meaning, variously, precious jewel, treasured taonga, the darling of her whanau", he said.

MY THOUGHTS: I think Alesha should give another beauty pageant a try because she has that 'look' that I think will be a hit in other major beauty pageants. It's nice to see that Miss World New Zealand is already gaining popularity on the mainstream media. It's one way of getting more beautiful girls to join this pageant in the future.

  • I was awfully disappointed with her receiving first runner up. She had run of the mill answers and her evening gown did not have that wow factor. I personally think that she should have gotten 4th or 5th. NOT 2nd.

  • Why is a runner up getting more publicity than the winner? I dont even think she has that 'look' as was suggested.

  • She is more girl next door than pageant material.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:56 AM

  • Her answers were so run of the mill. There was nothing that intellectual about them.

  • Kahurangi has lots of media attention especially from Maori papers, the suburbans, and TV programs.

Both Kahurangi and Alesha are lovely girls as well as the rest of the contestants. You should have seen how the girls put their hands together and shouted "Hurray" after the coronation. It was awesome and moving!

  • I think Kahurangi is so deserving of this title. I just dont think that Alesha did deserve first runner up. I think Leah-Anne did, Alesha should have gotten 3rd runner up.

  • I really cant see what is that special about her... I cant see anything that makes me go wow. I agree with the previouse comment, she's got the girl next door look down, but thats it. Even looking at photos from the night, nothing makes me go - she should really did deserve first runner up let alone win it. I think Kahurangi is absolutely beautiful and I wish her luck!

  • Its not that original is it? Wanting to teach in developing countries? I know her and She isnt that bright as it is!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:31 PM

  • I think to make it in other major pageants you need to be more than just average. And thats what she is. Im in full agreeance here, there is nothing spectacular about her.

  • I was a contestant this year, and I must say, I was surprised that she got runner up. I thought that Kim Powel would have got it. And she comes across really really ditzy...

  • What was the talent section like? Who really did shine? What was Alesha Adams dance like?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:16 PM

  • I thought aleshia adams and aleshia f dances were really really good I think they had the best talents. The top three in talent were Kahurangi leah anne and rosita. Rosita won and ahe definately deserved it she was awesome playing the acordian. Kahurangi did a poi item and leah ann a tihesian dance I think it was taihesian. They were also good. BUT IT REALLY WAS sticking whole ethnic kinda theme the pageant has going on lol. I think both the aleshias dances were the good definately the most talented but maybe not originality as there were like 5 lyrical dances

  • I think talent is such a queer thing to have in a pageant. Sure you want the people to know the girls have brains and talent. But its reduced to stage talent and if your not a dances singer or musical instrument player what do you do lol. And a good speech will never have as much impact as good dance. Im an elite young athlete with national titles so its obvious im talented but my talents cant be shown on stage what would I do in the talent section if i was to enter? lol I find it funny

  • So, if Aleisha Faulkners dance was just as good, and she's more striking looking and her evening gown was way nicer than alesha adams, how did she not make it into the top 8 and yet she got first runner up? It dont make much sense. I think that the runner ups were all screwed up and not consistant.

  • I was a contestant in this comp, and i agree with the person a couple of comments above, i have represented NZ in many sports and things but didnt want to do the whole dance or singing thing. but when i asked if i coulddo small ball rifle shotting they said no.. surprise surprise. so i had to conform and dance. it is a bit awkward in that respect.

  • This is why im looking forward to Earth. They are not having a talent section, all your talents can come from other parts of life, not just the dance or singing or playing music, its everywhere. Its all about the experiences gained from your talents, not just performing certain types.

  • GAG! Dnt reali like her. Think there were othas way way way beta than her. shes average, not reali that gr8.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:59 PM

  • Having watched the show I was actually surprised to see Alesha being part of the runner ups. She appeared more like a self-centered model than a charismatic beauty pageant.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:11 PM

  • She's self centered in real life too. Only interested in herself.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:37 PM

  • Haha, I agree with the post on the previous entry... those poor poor chilren, they will have to wait while she continues being self-centered and stuck up. All a big publicity stunt if u ask me - she doesnt seem like she has any intentions helping these children, "after her modelling career". Why cant she do it now? She just sounds fame hungry to me.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:57 PM

  • Haha, I never noticed that before. Silly girl. Fame isnt that great, and it doesnt seem like she will make it either - too hungry.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:02 PM

  • Hey!Why was my comment deleted?! Did you get in trouble with the author of that article?I said I thought it was funny that she wanted to help the children AFTER her modeling career.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:58 PM

  • Honey, your comment wasnt deleted, you just put it on the other post... I think its bloody funny too.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:18 PM

  • the reason that we have talents in new zealand pageants is because when you go to an international pagent they have a talent section too. Who ever wins miss earth will need to organise a talent to perform over seas.

So why not judge people on there talents before they go and give them some practice rather than finding the person who wins has no talent? or is not prepared?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:01 AM

  • I didnt think that Earth international had a talent section either...?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:44 PM

  • Im pretty sure that entries for earth are basically closed...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:58 PM

  • Talent is an integral part of NZAPT competition and their activities are patterned after international pageants.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:12 PM

  • Miss Earth (international) has always a talent competition. Unfortunately most NZ reps had no talent to perform except those NZ girls who represented their Pacific nations, those delegates came from New Zealand Asia Pacific Trust.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:16 PM

  • having been part of Miss World NZ (not a contestant though), spending alot of time every weekend with all the girls and knowing a few of them from previous pageants or just in general and also competting in NZAPT pageants and others, i've got to say kahurangi definately deserved the win, she stood out throughout the pageant and is a very genuine, freindly girl. She is also a very intelligent girl aswell. and i do agree with the above posts.. alesha Adams did not deserve to be first runner up. Although i have no problem with her personality, and i don't think people should be judging her on a personal level if they have not spent time with her and actually gotten to know her. I believe she is more of a "model pretty" then a "pageant pretty" and if for some reason kahu cannot make the oversea's pageant, i don't believe Alesha could do well in ukraine, and i don't think the judges really had that in mind on the night. However all the girls did very well and i'm very proud of all of them :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:55 PM

  • I think the above comment is on to something. Looking at the world website I just didnt think that Alesha Adams had the...class? Maybe look is the word Im after, but, she just didnt stand out. I think Kim Powel looked absolutely gorgeous as did Leah-Anne. I just dont think that she looks like she belongs in the pageant.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:31 PM

  • How did she even win Canterbury? Let alone runner up.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:15 PM

  • I think she should just stick to modelling. Thats what shes more suited too.
